Tell us a bit about your role as Accela’s Talent Director?
My role is to manage everything “people” related both internally and externally. This means I manage the talent and HR function for Accela, I manage our recruitment agency where we partner with external clients to fill roles, I manage our talent management vertical where we deliver strategic talent projects and I oversee our outsourced HR function.
What aspects of your role do you enjoy the most?
I love working with such a diversity of people. I love that I work with clients to solve talent problems and work with candidates to help navigate their career journey. At Accela, we are able to impact the experience in a positive way when people join a company, as well as when they exit.
Part of your role as the talent director, you lead the talent team to source for the best candidates. What are some qualities you are looking for in a good candidate?
Attitude and mindset, complimented by technical skills to suit the job. Our clients are growing fast, moving fast and experience constant change. This means we look for candidates who learn fast, adapt quickly and have a growth and “business owner” mindset.
What are 3 words to describe your leadership style?
Individualized – I think it’s important to be able to change your approach based on what people need from you. For example, I can be collaborative, but I can also be directive if that’s what my team needs. Goal oriented – I work and lead by setting clear goals and objectives we can all work to achieve together. Growth Oriented – I love to learn about new things and share what I’ve learned with others. For me, it’s so important that we continue to bring new ideas into the business to help it constantly evolve and grow.
Before working here at Accela, what was the most unusual or interesting job you’ve ever had?
I have been lucky to have awesome jobs throughout my career. Growing up I worked in my family business, a beautiful convenience store in Coolum Beach which my Mum still runs today. While in university I sold shoes in a boutique store in Brisbane and immediately following university I started working in recruitment. Not unusual but it’s been a great ride and has landed me in Brisbane, Melbourne, Singapore and Malaysia.
What do you value most in a job?
My team. Not just my immediate team, but everyone around me. We spend so much time at work, in the office, on the phone, attending event and meet-ups and meeting with clients and I believe it is the people around us that really makes it all worth it.
Having worked with various global recruitment agencies previously, what would you say truly differentiates Accela from the many competitive choices that exist today?
This is one of the most common questions we get from new clients – what is your Unique Selling Point (USP)? Why should we work with you? Truthfully, there are so many great agencies and recruiters in Singapore! What differentiates Accela? We are not simply a run-of-the-mill transactional KPI driven recruitment agency. We are a multi-service agency and we offer a holistic solution. We truly adapt to suit the need of a business. We help our clients find the best talent in the market, and at the same time reduce external recruitment agency spend through training and talent management indicatives.
What is your proudest moment at Accela?
There are many. Accela really filled a gap in both what I was looking for in my career, and Accela fills a huge gap in the recruitment and talent industry.
It really is an honor to know that our clients trust us so much that they want to outsource all Recruitment and Talent Management to Accela. They believe in what we do as much as we do, and that’s a great feeling.
Did you know all your life you had wanted to work in human resources?
No, not at all! Recruitment is a great career for anyone who loves people and wants to earn good money and that was me when I graduated from university. Basically, how can I pay my student loan off as quickly as possible? I loved recruitment and made some great friends and has great fun! As I became more senior I naturally started to enjoy the more consultative components of the role which allowed me to work closer with clients, and make a longer lasting impact to the business. Blending recruitment, talent management and HR at Accela has allowed me to utilise my 9+ years of technology and digital recruitment experience and broad industry knowledge to support businesses as they scale.
Do you have any hidden talents?
I love music and I love to sing. I’m constantly humming and singing to myself at my desk, as I walk around, etc. I don’t know if you could call it a talent, but I love it. I also have taken some courses on basic coding. I definitely can’t give our Web Developer, Lord, a run for his money, but I’d love to be able to assist him on a site at some point.
