National Day Singapore 2023: How The Accela Team is Celebrating
Happy National Day Singapore! This August 9th marks the nation's 58th birthday, and is a time where families come together to celebrate this special occasion. We honour Singapore's independence and progress, cherishing the unity and achievements of this place we call home.
In anticipation of the upcoming celebrations, we've rounded up how some of us at Accela will be spending the holiday, as they share their favourite National Day memories and insights on what National Day Singapore means to them.
Amelia Yeo, Communications Executive
National Day for me has always been a time for the extended family to get together. We’re not a particularly patriotic bunch, but local, char-filled Singaporean food has always been the core of bringing us together. Must-haves at dinner include black pepper crab from Long Beach, BBQ chicken wings from Bedok 85, and a bag of durians enjoyed over loud and mostly off-pitched karaoke.
Erin, CEO and Co-Founder
One of my fondest memories of National Day was NDP 50. It was incredible to be in Singapore for a milestone celebration. To me, this day marks a celebration of a young country with an already rich history.
Jen Stewart, Senior Communications Director
I have a lot of fond memories of National Day, and this year will be a big one for me as I am celebrating ten years in Singapore. SG50 is a particular standout, as I attended many great events, ran some really fun client campaigns and watched all the festivities from the bay. To me, this will always be a reminder of how lucky I am to call this little red dot my home!
Lydia Lee, Senior HR Specialist
I volunteer with the Singapore Red Cross, so more often than not, I am on the ground volunteering during National Day! I got a sneak peek of the show early so that’s my special memory.
To me, each year’s national day is a highlight reel of the past year, and a recollection and acknowledgement of all the people that has brought us to where we are today.
Nishanthi Soundarajan, Corporate Secretary Lead
National Day is extra special for me as my husband is a National Day baby. Every year, we gather at home with our parents and siblings while watching the live telecast of the parade while celebrating his birthday.
Our favourite segments of the parade, to name a few, are the airshow of the fighter jets as well as the Helicopter carrying our National flag, marchings of all the uniformed groups and the entry of all cabinet ministers and our Honourable President. Last but not least, we never get tired of the beautiful fireworks show as it lights up our beautiful skyline.
As I'm a parent now, I make it a point to celebrate National Day together with my kids just like how my parents did with us when we were younger. It's a day that we always look forward to celebrating our love and patriotism for our beloved homeland, Singapore.
Happy birthday, Singapore!
Ranjini Padattil, Finance Associate
My favourite tradition associated with Singapore's National Day is helping my kids make their Singapore Flags and singing Singapore's National Anthem with them. We go out and eat local Singapore dishes like Chicken Rice and Laksa to celebrate the occasion.
It is a day when I cherish being a part of this country that has been my home away from home for so many years now. Truly grateful for every opportunity that I got here.
Savitha Vasan, Senior Finance Manager
My plan for the day is to go cycling down the Sengkang Reservoir and enjoy nature. We plan to watch the NDP programs on TV as well.
Sreekutty Kottoor Rajan, Finance Associate
Singapore National Day is special because I have been staying here for the last 4 years and it's a second home for me.
Very Excited about Singapore's 58th Birthday!
Vanessa Mittman, Client Director
We can watch the flybys from our rooftop terrace on the East Coast. Whenever we hear the sonic boom of the fighter jets overhead on their training days, my family and I rush up to our rooftop to take videos and wave to our neighbours doing the same. We often travel on National Day, making our impromptu rooftop tradition a fun annual memory, especially for kids
Yi Lin Lou, Finance Associate
My favourite memory for National Day is to see all of my uncles, aunt and cousins gathering around at my grandparents house, enjoying our grandmother home cooked food while watching the livestream National Day Parade on the television!
